Brihadeeswara Temple

Thanjavur is famous for the Brihadeeswara temple built by Chola emperor Raja Raja I (AD 985 - 1012), the first sailor king of India. The temple has been listed as one of the World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO. Appropriately called Brihadisvara and Daksinameru, this famous Saiva temple was inaugurated by the emperor himself in his 19th regal year (AD 1009-10) and named it after himself as Rajesvara Peruvudaiyar. It has the reputation of being the most ambitious structural temple built of granite ever.

The Palace

The Palace was built partly by the Nayaks of Vijayanagar in 1550 AD, and partly by the Marathas. Adjacent to the temple the palace is a series of large and rambling buildings of fine masonry. The entrance is by way of a huge quadrangular courtyard. The surrounding walls are pierced by big gate to the north and east. The courtyard leads to a many-pillared hall. A small inner courtyard gives access to a large one.
