Lingaraja Temple

Built in the 11th century AD the great Lingaraja temple is one of the finest example of a Hindu Temple in India. Standing in a cluster of sixty-five smaller shrines in a big complex, the temple's mighty tower (the vimana) dominates the landscape for miles around. The presiding deity of the temple is Tribhubaneswar (the Lord of the three worlds) popularly called Lingaraja. In the garbha griha (sanctum sanctorum) is enshrined the swayambhu linga, or self-established Linga, the symbol of Lord Shiva. The bhogmandir and the natyamandir or dance hall, and were probably added a century or so later, although they are in ideal concord with the architectural design as a whole. Among the other important temples in the vicinity are those of Parvati, Ananta, Bhagavati, Brahmeshwar, Basudeva, Bhaskareshwar, and Kedareshwar
