Best Travel to Periyar
It's the home of the stubborn bison and the elephant that is an integral part of Kerala. Antelopes frolic in the undergrowth and langur fill the air with their twaddle. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, most of it covered by forests, is a delightful place to soak in the luxury of a holiday in Kerala.

You can spend a part of your holiday here going on a guided trek through the jungle. In the center of the sanctuary is Thekkady, where most boats land and take off from. You can also get a boat tour of the sanctuary, an option most tourists pick. Or, you could choose to roam around the sanctuary at a more leisurely pace, perched in comfort atop a stately elephant. Periyar gives tourists the chance to count the stars from an observation tower or rest house, even as they wait to spot wildlife. 
You can set yourself a day on the spice route around Periyar. The things to check out here are the cardamom and cinnamon plantations. If you have a yen for things fragrant, don't miss the sandalwood plantations in and around Periyar either.
The sanctuary was once home to a number of tribal communities. None of them live within its confines now, though. They can still be found around the perimeter of the sanctuary and many of them act as tourist guides and wildlife watchers, helping to keep an eye on the land they once called home.

The best time to visit Periyar is between October and April.

The nearest town is Kumily (4 km).
By road: Periyar is connected by bus service from Thiruvananthapuram (271 km), Cochin (200 km), Kottayam (114 km), and Madurai (140 km).
By rail : The nearest railhead is Kottayam on the Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram line.
